Echinacea

  • Scientific Name : Echinacea angustifolia, Echinacea purpurea, Echinacea pallida
  • History : Used by native Americans to treat wounds. 
  • Component : Active compounds include immonustimulating polysaccharides, echinacin (anti-inflammatory effect like corticosteriods with collagen and heals wounds), inulin (potent stimulator of complement pathyway), viral neutralization, bacterial destruction and leukocyte chemotaxis. They have caffeic and ferulic acid (chlorogenic acid, echinoside), flavonoids, rutin, pyrrolizidane alkaloids, alkamides, polyenes, volatile oils. In vitro studies suggest Echinacea protects from ultra violet light damage. Pyrrolizidane alkaloids and glycoproteins are not in E. pallida and E. angustifolia. 
  • Benefits/Characteristics : All three versions protect collagen, antioxidant properties, and boost immunity. E. angustifolia known for antiseptic and analgesic properties. E. purpurea is approved by Commission E for treating inflammation, wounds, burns, prevent infection and used in cosmeceuticals.
